The Writer Is…

…the woman at the stove adding cups of this and teaspoons of that to the soup while strange faces emerge in the place where her recipe should be recalled…

…the man at the sink washing egg-yolk from the breakfast plates while the doctor, lawyer, hero, villain, sidekick, loser introduce their problems but the egg won’t rub off and the characters won’t take shape…

…the employee driving the pallet jack through the warehouse testing names for his love interest, which eludes him, as do the products for the order he’s preparing…

…the postal clerk whistling between mailboxes while songs from the era he writes about form a playlist, are discarded for kitsch or overuse or bad lyrics…

…the student, teacher, scullery hand…

… orderly, soldier, flight attendant…

…clerk, teller, taxi driver…

…missing turns, miscounting change, spilling drinks, marching left-on-right, swabbing the morgue, chopping not dicing the master chef’s scallions, daydreaming, daydreaming…

…while unknown faces swarm their consciousness demanding personality and character, color and scent.
