In Virginia, the sun has set on the shortest day of the year. I find optimism in this. Though we are surrounded by darkness – darkness on all sides – the light is now returning.

It reminds me of an album I listened to a lot in the 90s, the music of George Winston. His piano captures a magic to the midnight snow and striking chill of dead winter. I have no passion for the presence of snow right now, but I can see how it would inspire an artist.

Beauty can be found in winter, even for people who prefer sandals to snow boots.

For all my pagan brothers and sisters out there, happy winter solstice.

  2. in 1973 a work friend hosted a Feast of the Unconquered Sun (on the 21st of course). Though poorly attended–I was the only guest–I fell in love with the idea of celebrating the return of longer days. May the same be true for you.
