In 1731 Benjamin Franklin and his discussion group, the Junto, paved the way for the public lending library system we enjoy throughout America today.
Their articles of agreement for a subscription library encouraged fifty members to contribute forty shillings apiece, with ten shillings more annually, enabling the purchase of communal books to be read at home.
Some 9,000 central administrations run over 17,500 library units today.
I’m grateful to the Fairfax County Public Library for adding Profiles in Service: Peace Corps Roots in American Diplomacy, their—our!—catalogue. Place a hold on your copy today.
Or, if you just can’t wait, it’s easy to pick up a soft cover or kindle edition at Amazon for immediate enjoyment.
